Ireland Headlines News

The Government has been strongly criticised because no serving senior garda officer has applied for the role of deputy garda commissioner and there has been a call to pause the recruitment process.

The position is the second-highest rank in An Garda Síochána and is of national importance as it has responsibility for frontline policing encompassing organised, subversive and serious crime including domestic and international terrorism.

"US and UK security and intelligence experts have said they wouldn't even contemplate such a move in their own countries, such is the importance of protecting national security and the need to have a citizen of the state in that role." Senior gardaí face tax bills of up to €300,000 at present and could face a bill of up to €500,000 if they were appointed to the rank of deputy commissioner.
