New suspect arrested over Ashling Murphy murder just hours after funeral

The man is in custody in Tullamore Garda Station after being escorted from the capital, arriving in an unmarked Garda vehicle after 12.20pm on Tuesday afternoon.That does not include the time the man takes in breaks of detention which he is entitled to.

The foreign national has been in hospital since last Thursday, when he presented himself with self-inflicted stab wounds.Ashling, 23, was brutally attacked and murdered on the Grand Canal Way between Boland’s Lough and Digby’s bridge in the Tullamore last Wednesday at 4pm as she went for a run. She had just left her workplace beforehand at Durrow National School, a short drive away, where she was a taught first class students.

A Garda spokesman said: "Gardai investigating the fatal assault on Ashling Murphy that occurred at approximately 4pm on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, along the canal bank at Cappincur, Tullamore, County Offaly have arrested a male in his 30s on suspicion of murder. "The male is now detained in Tullamore Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.Her funeral took place on Tuesday morning at St Brigid’s Church, Mountbolus before a private burial.They have recovered forensic evidence from the remains of Ashling, which she left behind after fighting for her life.
