Those who refuse could be hit with a fine

Leitrim County Council are set to introduce DNA testing to identify dog owners who neglect to pick up dog poo left by their pets on streets, parks, walking trails and housing estates. They will then take samples of the waste and, using DNA technology, match them up with saliva samples taken from dogs in the same area.

But owners who fail to comply will be issued with a Statutory Notice under the Animal Health and Welfare Act which compels the owner to allow a saliva sample to be taken from their dog.
