Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that a new 'iron curtain' was descending between Russia and the West

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that a new"iron curtain" was descending between Russia and the West.

"It is interested in what has been decided in Brussels. And what has been decided in Washington has been decided in Brussels," Mr Lavrov said. Ukraine's southern military command posted an image on Facebook of what appeared to be the island, seen from the air, with at least five huge columns of black smoke rising above it from what it described as an assault by missiles and artillery.

The bare rocky outcrop controls sea lanes to Odesa, Ukraine's main Black Sea port, where Russia's blockade has prevented grain exports from one of the world's main suppliers, creating a global shortage, price inflation and risk of famine. The ambassador of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic told Russia's RIA news agency the Lysychansk oil refinery was now fully controlled by Russian and pro-Russian forces, and all roads to Lysychansk were also under their control.

Mr Putin was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying he could not rule out that tensions would emerge in Moscow's relations with Helsinki and Stockholm over their joining NATO.
