Green Party members have backed an historic coalition with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael as new government will be formed with Micheál Martin to be elected taoiseach tomorrow

There was stronger opposition amongst the council of local representatives with 57 per cent approving the deal and 43 per cent voting against it.Support among the executive council of the party saw 85 per cent vote in favour of the deal.

He said the indications for Fianna Fail support were good. “I am confident and hopeful that we will see all three parties endorsing this coalition agreement today, able to establish a new government tomorrow and get down to work and get busy, and that is the most important thing,” he said. He said his party’s 80/20 majority was very clear. “That is a very strong mandate for a third term in Government.

However, Fine Gael is expected to take the Department of Justice while Fianna Fáil will take the Department of Housing. Fine Gael will also take Finance and Foreign Affairs and it is also expected it will take the Department of Jobs. Fianna Fáil is expected to take the position of Government Chief Whip, with the other two super juniors at Cabinet going to Fine Gael and the Greens. It is not yet clear which of the super juniors from Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael will take on responsibility for the roads portfolio.

The Greens are set to have a total of four TDs at the cabinet table if the party approves the programme for government today and the coalition is formed over the weekend. The party will have three full cabinet ministries, including Mr Ryan’s, and also a “super junior”.
