A new bill to freeze evictions of tenants left cash-strapped by the pandemic has been branded “an attack on renters”.It will replace a blanket ban on evictions and rent hikes with one limited to tenants who have lost income due to Covid-19.
However it will only apply to those who have lost jobs or income due to the pandemic, including people on the pandemic unemployment payment or wage subsidy scheme. He added the protections for renters whose income have been hit by Covid-19 are weak and overly complex and easy for rogue landlords to get around.
People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett said “the slithering, sliding and U-turns of Fianna Fáil and the Green Party in particular have begun in earnest with this Bill.” Mr O’Brien said the law aimed to balance the needs of those hit by the pandemic with the property rights and the legitimate interests of landlords.
He said for tenants who are unable to pay their rent due to Covid-19, the bill provides for an increased notice of eviction period from 28 days to 90 days.
