Nearly 300 mourners gather for funeral at Leitrim cemetery

Members of the Travelling community in Carrick-on-Shannon and Longford town were joined by relatives living in Britain for the funeral of Davey Reilly which drew a large Garda presence to the town for the past two days.

Gardaí set up checkpoints on the N4 approach into the town and also at various points in the Attirory townland. Following the funeral, a large number of mourners who had initially been turned away gathered on foot in a nearby car park and ran through a Garda checkpoint and made their way to the marquee nearby.PP with reduced numbers attending in St Mary’s Church. After the Mass, Mr Reilly’s remains were brought to St Mary’s Cemetery in a horse-drawn glass hearse led by two white horses.

Mourners held aloft floral tributes and music was played aloud as the cortege made its way to the cemetery with about 300 people present, none of whom were seen to be wearing protective face masks.

Salt of the earth. Marginalised. Punished. Sure why should they have to follow guidelines or laws like the rest of us.

Marquees the whole 9 yards . The Government have no bother installing speed traps to catch you if you go over an average speed of 120 on you're commute but 300 travellers can gather and give two fingers to cops. Everything in this country is designed to shaft working people.

No condemnation from McEntee, no quip from harris, no outrage from coveney, no pontification from varadkar, no outrage from Martin

200 had a party in a graveyard in Rathkeale a couple of weeks ago.

Good for them. They recognise that burying their dead with dignity is more important than following the ridiculous unproven dictats that are destroying our community life, paralysing our economy, and ruining our health.
