Ireland’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre has reported another rise in confirmed cases of the new Covid strain JN.1. It comes as some people currently infected are reporting nasty symptoms.

Ireland’s health officials have reported another rise in confirmed cases of the new JN.1 Covid variant.Earlier this week, it said that known infections have risen by 432 to 1,264. This marks a 51.9% increase in just over a month.

Giving an update on Covid in Ireland, it said: “Since February 2023, XBB SARS-CoV-2 variants have dominated circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants worldwide. Since mid-June 2023, XBB.1.5 and related lineages with the F456L mutation in the spike protein increased in predominance globally and in Ireland. However, since November 2023, the BA.2.86 sublineage JN.1 has rapidly increased and is replacing XBB.1.5-like lineages.

“There have been 1,423 COVID-19 cases confirmed as infected with ‘XBB.1.5-like + F456L’ lineages to date in Ireland. There have been 254 COVID-19 cases confirmed as infected with ‘XBB.1.5-like + L455F + F456L’ ‘FLip’ lineages to date in Ireland.” Meanwhile, although the JN.1 variant shares common symptoms with previous strains, the UK’s Office for National Statistics recently uncovered two additional 'warning signs': Trouble sleeping and worry/anxiety.
