It took the world until 1 April to reach its first million cases.

Global coronavirus cases surpassed five million today, with Latin America overtaking the United States and Europe in the past week to report the largest portion of new daily cases globally.

Latin America accounted for around a third of the 91,000 cases reported earlier this week. Europe and the United States each accounted for just over 20%. At more than five million cases, the virus has infected more people in under six months than the annual total of severe flu cases, which the World Health Organization estimates is around three million to five million globally.

Many of the 5,000,000 are no longer infected. But don't let that spoil the headline.

It's cool , the UK US Brazil are doing all the heavy lifting. Russia possibly trailing up the rear... We don't know..

‘Known’ cases

I have seen online the test for the virus can show a positive if you have a cold Ebola or the measles as they are all from the Corona strain Is this possible Thence perhaps expected second wave

FOOLS DAY? You could'nt make this up. Seasonal flu, renamed covid 19. Create mass hysteria. The Fools will believe it.

This isn’t a very good article. It leaves too many questions unanswered. Are influenza tests carried out as extensively as COVID19 testing is? If not, it’s difficult to compare.

RTÉ are POISON!!

That number's a joke. We now know 50% are asymptomatic. Didn't know they had it. And added to that are children symptoms so mild, that they're missed.

Please get scientists to check your work! You dont understand the difference between positive tests and cases. Seriously it's been 5 months now.

Its getting worse not better on a worldwide basis. Over 90000 a day now with no real idea how bad it is in many countries.

It’s in the nature of exponential spread that it seems to start very slow. The figure worth noting is how we went from a few dozen to 10,000 even with lockdown in place in a very short time. The lockdown worked however. Transmission chains were broken. Worth remembering.

Is this countdown edifying? Total global circulation is inevitable. And the sooner we build some immunity the better.
