Image: PA Images Image: PA Images THE MINIMUM WAGE increase did not lead to higher labour costs for the vast majority of Irish firms, a study has found.

A new ESRI study, funded by the Low Pay Commission, found that the 2016 minimum wage increase led to higher labour costs among firms with more than half of their employees on the minimum wage.Compared to a firm with no minimum wage employees, a firm that pays all of their workers the minimum wage experienced a 5% increase in their average weekly labour costs.

There was no evidence that firms reduced their number of employees in response to the minimum wage increase the study also found. Dr Paul Redmond, an author of the report said: “Labour costs are a key indicator of country-level competitiveness and our research shows that the 2016 changes to the minimum wage had no significant impact on the labour costs of the vast majority of Irish firms that employ minimum wage workers.

Catastrophic Mis management by Fianna Fáil, access to European cash by Irish Banks led to a situation that everyone knew was going to lead to disaster. The Banking system was only rescued because of knock on effects it was going to have on the Euro. Its been on life support since The only way out is to renege on our cripplin debt, withdraw from the Euro and declare an end to the second Republic (The first one ended with the Troika) The alternative is Ireland becoming a Foreign owned Vassal State.. Is this what people died for in 600 years of oppression? To give housing, tax free, to foreign vulture funds on top of this - locking young people out of ever owning their homes - is unforgivable.
