Met Eireann has issued a five-day heat alert for Ireland, forecasting temperatures of almost 25C by Monday. However, uncertainty looms beyond the warm spell, with the national forecaster warning of a potential ominous turn in the weather.

Met Eireann has issued a five-day heat alert for Ireland, warning of rising temperatures as the country finally enjoys a period of dry and settled weather.

While long-range forecasts are notoriously subject to change, at this stage, the meteorological agency says there's a chance the weather will take a terrible turn. Giving day-by-day breakdown of what to expect over the coming days, Met Eireann said: "Rather cloudy Thursday in the north, west and southwest with isolated patches of light rain and drizzle. Dry elsewhere with some sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 16C to 21 Cor 22C , coolest for Atlantic coastal areas, warmest in the east, in mostly light to moderate southwest winds, becoming southeasterly along the east coast, and turning fresher in the west and northwest later.
