Former England and Arsenal star Paul Merson admits he wanted to commit suicide just 12 months ago as he struggled to battle his addictions

It is 25 years since Paul Merson broke down in tears as he spoke publically for the first time about his addictions to drink, drugs and gambling.

But his latest shocking revelation that he wanted to commit suicide only 12 months ago, before he gave up the booze, showed how scarily close he has come to his own last orders. “It was only because of the kids really, and my wife, and a little bit of consciousness, that I didn’t. “It’s only now I know. I have an illness. I have a mental illness. I’ve accepted that now. Before, I used to beat myself up all the time.”
