The European Parliament has rejected an attempt to ban companies from branding plant-based products with names like 'veggie burger', but they backed an amendment to ban the use of terms like 'cheese' or 'yoghurt' for dairy-free products

The European Parliament rejected a much-mocked attempt to ban companies from branding plant-based products with meaty names like "veggie burger".

"Their preposterous claims that consumers would be confused by the use of names such as burgers, sausages, schnitzels and mince on clearly labelled vegetarian meat substitutes, have been rightly rejected as disproportionate nonsense." "They're now muddying the debate on farming reform with a pointless vote on food names -- it's pathetic that the parliament wouldn't even stand up to the industrial agriculture lobbyists on this."

That is not a burger.

Good stuff. I was wondering if the farmers would get away with that one. But it looks like time up for beef.

Appropriation of dairy terms for commercial gain has long been banned in Europe. Based on UN Codex guidance, EU Law and European Court of Justice Judgements. Todays vote again rubber-stamps this. I have to check but i think countries can still protect meat terms.

What’s their opinion on peanut butter? Cream crackers? Fish fingers? Black pudding? Mincemeat? Lady fingers? Animal crackers? Hamburgers? Eggplant? There’s loads of food names that don’t match the food. There’s bigger problems in the world than vegan yogurt and vegan cheese.

If it says Vegan burger or veggie burger that should be ok. Labeling something impossible burger, miracle burger etc shouldn't. The default if not listed should be beef. If it's chicken, Turkey, lamb, veggie that should be in the title

Now that this serious topic has been sorted out, hopefully they gonna spend 5 minutes talking about the invasion of Europe... Well, whopee de do dah 🥳. As a vegetarian, I couldn’t care less what they are called. As a citizen of Europe, I am horrified that the European Parliament had nothing better to do! WTAF? 😳 How much did it cost taxpayers to get that decision made?
