Carroll Cuisine meat plant in Tullamore, Co Offaly temporarily shuts after nine staff test positive for coronavirus

Meat plant Carroll Cuisine has temporarily shut after nine of its staff members tested positive for Covid-19.

CEO Kieran Carolan said: “The health, safety and wellbeing of all our people and our wider communities is an absolute priority for us at all times. The closure comes after Fianna Fail Minister of State Sean Fleming called on the factory this morning to voluntarily shut its doors. “Clear guidance is required on the measures, procedures and roadmap envisaged by the Government in this regard.

Mr Carolan said employees at the factory will continue to be paid as normal and said they are grateful to staff for their “excellent dedication.”“We are very grateful to our staff for their excellent dedication and commitment and for the support and encouragement of our communities however we believe this temporary suspension of operations is the best course of action at this time.

SIPTU Manufacturing Division Organiser, Greg Ennis said: “MII representatives also agreed to consider a SIPTU Charter outlining the protections needed for meat workers in relation to Covid-19 emergency.
