WATCH: Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue is live on MorningIreland to explain efforts to tighten the laws around the control of dogs | Read more:

The move comes after a young boy was attacked and injured by a pit bull terrier in Co Wexford last month.

The Department of Agriculture is the lead on microchipping and Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien’s Department oversees local authorities, who are responsible for policing and enforcement. The minister also said that the number of dog wardens varies between local authorities with"different arrangements in place"and this is something he will be assessing and working with other ministers to try improve that.

Up to now, legislation from Brussels has been signed into law by individual ministers - without reference to the Dáil or Seanad.

Dog policies are not well enforced. Vicious breeds such as pit bull terriers should be banned outright. Anyone found owning one prosecuted and the dog put down. That is the solution, but it needs to be enforced.

What did he say about our lossing even more of our fisheries?

morningireland We must improve residents rights living near barking dogs. There are more of them than ever in residential areas. The dog warden saying its a legal matter isn't good enough any more. We pay property taxes now and I've 5 nuisance dogs in gardens near me destroying the neighbourhood

morningireland Seriously? Really?McConalogue doesn't know how many wardens there are, his Dept has ignored 100s of reports about illegal adverts & AI fertility clinics, and has never prosecuted anyone for not having their dog microchipped.Yet this is who is going to be'fixing' things?🤦AWAD22

All dogs should have to wear muzzles in public

morningireland Is there any need to tighten laws? Why not start applying the ones that already exist?
