James McClean's Ireland career came to an end shortly after he swapped Championship side Wigan for League Two outfit Wrexham.

James McClean has opened up for the first time over the disappointment he felt about the way he was treated towards the end of his Ireland career.

“It’s obviously a successful one. It’s a sense of justification,” was how McClean described Wrexham’s promotion last weekend, speaking at an event in Dublin to commemorate World Autism Month. According to the original plan, McClean was going to stay with his club for that one, before joining the squad when they returned to Dublin.

“But look if the call ever comes, it’s not something I’ll be campaigning for, in my mind I’m retired, but if the call ever comes to play for your country, it’s a hard one to turn down.
