The former President moved to Dublin with her eldest daughter Emma, who was 15 at the time, and twins Justin and SaraMai, who were 13, when she was elected in 1997

Former President Mary McAleese has given a rare insight into her family life while living in Áras an Uachtaráin.

Mary said: "My kids never held me back from doing anything. But on the other hand I am very fortunate, I am the eldest of nine kids and Martin's father came to live with us when my daughter was only four months and he stayed with us for 18 years so we had a built-in babysitter. "I was certainly able to structure a life where I had the support that allowed me to pretty much do whatever I wanted. I was just lucky that way.She told VIP Magazine: "My twins were 13 and my eldest girl was 15.

"Justin, my son, is one of the most curious people in the world and he's also one of the most sociable so in a house with a staff, an army, civil servants, and people working in the catering side, he just loved it."Then there were the Gardai stationed around; he went around and found out who was from Donegal and who was a runner and who could run with his daddy!
