State Pathologist Dr Heidi Okkers carried out the post-mortem this afternoon, however the cause of death has still to be determined and gardaí are awaiting the results of toxicology and other tests.
It is still not clear whether the man sustained the head injury accidentally from a fall or deliberately, but gardaí say all the resources necessary to investigate his death have been deployed. An incident room has been established at Carrickmacross Garda Station, and gardaí have appealed to anyone with information to contact them on 042 969 0190, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or at any garda station.
Detectives also believe the man's body may have been at the gates of the M Hotel on the Kingscourt Road at Lossets for some hours before he was discovered unresponsive yesterday morning. The M hotel provides emergency accommodation for people seeking international protection in Ireland, and those living in the direct provision system.Gardaí have identified the man, who is originally from Africa, and are liaising with relatives before a decision is made to publicly name him.
They are also investigating if the man's death could be connected to a disturbance at the hotel on Halloween night. They believe the man had been involved in the earlier disturbance.
This is very sad news. His family will be devastated. We can only hope the perpetrator is caught and punished to the full extent of the law.
