Man, 30s, arrested as gardai seize M16 rifle and ammunition in Co Clare

Gardai conducted a search in a wooded area in Shannon, with the help of working police dogs, and discovered a Colt M16 rifle, a magazine, and more than 170 rounds of ammunition.

The man, aged in his 30s, was subsequently arrested and is being held at a garda station in County Clare.Gardai said they have launched an investigation and that the firearm and ammunition will be analysed by the Garda National Technical Bureau. A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Ennis have seized a firearm and ammunition and arrested one man following a search operation in Shannon, County Clare yesterday, Friday 15th September 2023.

"Gardaí attached to the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit, with assistance from the Emergency Response Unit and Southern Region Dog Unit, conducted a search of a wooded area in Shannon, Co. Clare yesterday afternoon."A male was arrested and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in County Clare.

"The firearm and ammunition are subject to analysis by the Ballistics Section of the Garda National Technical Bureau.
