Terence MacSwiney, a noted writer, dramatist and poet, died while on hunger strike in Brixton Prison on 25 October 1920

MacSwiney, who was also a noted writer, dramatist and poet, died while on hunger strike in Brixton Prison on 25 October 1920.

The collection 'The art and ideology of Terence MacSwiney', edited by Gabriel Doherty, Fiona Brennan and Neil Buttimer, was to be published in 2020 to mark the 100th anniversary of his death but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking at the launch at City Hall, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the collection is the first time the public has access"to the remarkable diversity and ambition of Terence MacSwiney's work", describing it as a vital tool to ensure MacSwiney's place in the national story.

Published by Cork University Press in association with Cork City Council's Commemorations Committee, Director of Services Corporate Affairs and International Relations Paul Moynihan said it is an impressive body of work offering new insights and understanding of MacSwiney. The gathering in the council chamber heard selected readings from the editors and songs from Máire Ní Chéileachair including"Shall my soul pass through old Ireland", written about Terence MacSwiney.
