Prisoners,Drug Problems,Addiction Counsellor

There has been no increase in the number of counsellors employed in Irish jails in nearly a decade

Prisoners with drug problems are being forced to wait over three months to see an addiction counsellor , new data has shown.

The issue was raised by Green Party TD Patrick Costello this week, who was told by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee that the average waiting time to see an addiction counsellor can be longer than three months in the larger prisons."There are many local variables unique to each prison which can influence how long a prisoner could remain on the waiting list to see an addiction counsellor," she explained.

Merchants Quay Ireland is engaged by the Irish Prison Service to provide an addiction-counselling service. It is currently working on "bespoke" options to manage these variables, the minister said. These options include one-to-one addiction counselling in the prison setting, one-to-one counselling via videolink, or group support within the detention facility."If there are concerns raised following a medical assessment, a prisoner will be prioritised. In addition, where waiting lists are high, MQI can offer group counselling as an alternative to one-to-one sessions to give access to as many people as possible," she said.
