Leo Varadkar has said the “stakes are high” ahead of this morning’s “not high stakes” Brexit showdown with Boris Johnson.
Government Buildings and Merrion Street outside will go into lockdown this morning when the Boris roadshow rolls into town.Mr Varadkar was playing down the prospects of any major breakthrough on the Brexit deadlock with Mr Johnson when speaking to reporters at Dublin Port yesterday. “I’d hope that an opportunity to share each other’s analysis and an opportunity to talk about some of the issues will be helpful. I am conscious that Prime Minister Johnson did vote for the backstop at one point and has taken a different position since then.
Mr Varadkar said in a landmark speech in the Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge last Thursday there would have to be customs checks “near” the border in a no-deal scenario. Yesterday he revealed that even if these do have to be introduced, negotiations would immediately begin to tear them down again.
