Those under 18 can drink in certain cases

Here in Ireland, we know that you must be 18 years of age before you can purchase alcohol, but what else do we need to know about alcohol and those under 18.

This isn’t what every teenager wants to hear when it comes to alcohol but the HSE has some great advice on ways to handle the questions that your teenager may throw at you like... “everyone else is allowed to go”. There is also the old myth of “If I’m too strict about underage drinking, my child will rebel and drink to excess” but in reality “teens who consider their parents to be permissive to alcohol use are more likely to abuse alcohol”.

A point to remember about alcohol consumption and teenagers is this: “A lot of young people are naturally curious about alcohol and its effects and want to experience this for themselves. They see alcohol all around them from advertising to its use on television programmes. They may also witness regular alcohol use in the home.

These may be some useful points to remember from Drinkaware.ie when it comes to facilitating that conversation which may be coming your way.
