Lee Keegan believes that Mayo’s hopes of reaching the latter stages of the Championship have significantly regressed on the back of Paddy Durcan’s injury.
While there always seemed to be a level of optimism that the team could bounce back amid a string of All-Ireland final defeats when Keegan was in his pomp, it isn’t quite apparent now. “The game for them was the Galway Connacht final and that took a real hammer blow to a lot of people because I don’t know if people had the same belief that the All-Ireland is there at the moment.
“Well it’s a significantly lesser now because of Paddy and his influence,” Keegan admitted. “There’s a couple of reasons. “And the way the game ended against Galway in the Connacht final, our six defenders there, you kind of looked around and without Paddy they looked a little bit leaderless to an extent. Paddy is their captain, he’s the guy who makes things happen.”
