Larissa Nolan comment: Wolfe Tone’s words from 220 years ago may well come back to haunt GE2020

“Our independence must be had at all hazards. If the men of property will not support us, they must fall. Those are the words of Wolfe Tone, father of Irish republicanism, inscribed on his tomb in Bodenstown, Co Kildare.

It has made housing the core issue of its campaign; pledging to free a generation locked out of not only home ownership but the rental market too. Studies show the party’s biggest support comes from the under-45 – We can’t change the past – but we have the power to change what’s happening now yet Leo just keeps banging on about Brexit, even though literally no one cares. How can he scaremonger about a future “economic disaster” with a straight face?

A country where the Fine Gael cranes never build family housing: just apart-hotels, international student accommodation and luxury co-living spaces for high-earning singletons. The state has abandoned its own policy on housing which states: “Home ownership should be available to as many people as possible… an important factor in good civic values.”

The Government can rattle on about low unemployment and earnings going up but there is no grassroots support for that. It’s not translating into real lives in any meaningful way.
