The “language sampler module” will be targeted at third- to sixth-class pupils in more than 100 primary and special schools.has invited expressions of interest from schools who may choose a foreign language or Irish sign language.in providing a six-week sampler module across a range of additional languages.
This module will provide one hour per week for teaching foreign languages within the normal school timetable and will be open to schools to participate on a voluntary basis. About €200,000 is being provided to support the initiative. A previous drive to teach foreign languages was axed as part of a cost-cutting effort in 2012. That initiative – set up in 1998 by the then minister for education Micheál Martin – introduced languages such as Italian, Spanish, German and French in fifth and sixth class.
Drop Irish then.
Well it was about time, I think.
Like English?
We were taught French in primary school and that’s a 1,000 years ago.
I started teaching my 2 year old Spanish - he picked it up really quickly . It Needs to be done earlier .
They can't get the Irish language right, maybe start with that.
Let’s successfully teach Irish first then take it from there.
They need to overhaul the teaching of Irish
The primary school curriculum is already overloaded and literacy levels in English are declining as a result. Where will the time for this come from?
What happened to national schools ?
SNAsSpeakOut As long as they drop religion
If they start in 3rd class, they should easily reach a level that meets the demands of the new common level Junior Cert by September of 4th class!
Maybe they should focus on teaching English instead. A lesson on why 'I done' and 'I seen' are verboten would be good. Of course a quick lesson in German to understand what verboten means would be required too.
Don't know why they are piloting it. When I started teaching we had a teacher of Modern Foreign languages in my primary school and they cut the post in the budget.
