The former Ireland manager, who masterminded their memorable 1994 World Cup campaign, was the guest of honour as England returned to the Irish capital for Sunday's friendly.
He won 35 caps for his country - and was on the losing side just twice - playing in every game of the 1966 tournament. He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of his contribution to the English game. “He actually qualified to play for Ireland but no one knew it at the time and we only just missed out on him. “I think I could have persuaded him, if I’d known. He still calls me his second dad and I do think I could have talked him into it.” Charlton said: “The two doors to the dressing rooms were opposite each other, so you could see into the England dressing room from where we were.
