Other countries would do well to follow Ireland’s example, according to one expert

“I’m not going to comment on the track record of previous projects, because it might not be politic of me to do so,” Canavan says. “But Ireland shouldn’t feel alone in that respect, it’s a well-trodden path and a normal tale wherever you look.

According to Canavan, it’s actually kudos to the Irish Government – during the height of the pandemic, there was a general global discouragement of public transport use but Canavan says the Government did what many other governments around the world did not do: it kept public transport plans and investments flowing, at least relatively so.

Does that mean that we’re on the right path? There’s a huge body of work to do between now and 2050, when the country is supposed to be approaching net-zero carbon emissions, which is going to take huge efforts when it comes to public transport planning and provision, as well as converting what remains of the private car fleet to electric power.

“It’s not just about the transition to electric vehicles,” he says. “You need a whole package, and the right elements are there as far as I’m concerned.

Has he ever used public transport?

Tried to get a train from Limerick Saturday morning for a 9am start in Cork city - no joy. So 🚘😭

No there is only public transport for big towns. What about the millions of people who live in the country? I have to travel at least 15 mins by car to get a bus. If I were to walk it would probably take over an hour. This country is a joke.

Is it a joke?

No

If it's doing better than you thought, that means you thought wrong originally, and are therefore not an expert.

No

Not a bit of it there are some towns that get returned bus service once a week or at most two. Take Kerry and then move up along the western sea board to Donegal. Oh they put on extra for the Summer to cater for the tourists. But you will see bus eireann using school buses then.

We’ve the only EU capital not to have a metro to the airport- utterly shameful. Tiny roads grind to a halt at rush hour every day of the week.Typical Irish times article trying to highlight any little stat to deflect from the very poor govt. ratings

Have you ever travelled outside of your Dublin bubble?

Must be satire. Public transport in rural Ireland? This: patchwork of providers in senseless competition, totally inadequate network and service, overpriced fares, clunky websites - about the only upside is the generally heroic nature of the drivers.

No

Ireland is a wealthy Western European nation. While Irish Public Transport may measure up well to the global standard. The only benchmark that actually counts is other wealthy Western European nations and we fall short.

Ireland or just Dublin?

It would take me 6 hours to get to Cork from Mayo, it also would take me at least 2.5 hours to get to Sligo by bus. Maybe in the East public transport is getting better but in the west it's still neglected as ever.

Piss take surely.

You might want to visit Donegal. If my son wanted to change jobs to the employer 10 minutes (12 k) down the main road, he'd have to get a taxi, at a cost of about €40 a day. So he goes to work 29k away because the bus/ taxi is easier/ cheaper to manage at about €20 a day

No

In fairness our Bus Eireann services and main Irish rail routes are very good, only problem is traffic congestion & lack of bus lanes for the whole network causing delays & cancellations, more services are especially needed on regional Irish rail routes.

no

answer: No

Plans were drawn up for the DART in the 70s, to actually serve the city, the airport and surrounding areas, not just a coastline track for wealthy people. The 'experts' at the time said that bus travel would be better 🤦‍♂️ That's just Dublin, look at the state of the rest.

Have you heard of rural Ireland?

It's Feb 1 not April 1

Nope.

The interview with the expert should have been carried out when he was sober.

SPOILER: NO

What public transport?

FCUK NO

Cork City does not even have a park and ride on the northside of the city. Public transport in Ireland only works in Dublin. And the green party and Eammon Ryan have no clue what's happening in rural Ireland

Fuck no

No

No

No

neilmbriscoe Seeing as you specialise in motoring, you probably don't use public transport much, give it a try instead of reading about it

Not a chance. Look at any other capital city in Europe and you'll see we are 50 years behind on public transport

Not a chance. Look at any other capital city in Europe and you'll see we are 50 years behind on public transport

Ireland's public transport today is as good as Singapore's public transport in the 80s

Have some cop on even asking that question 🙄

In Dublin... The end.

No. As a student or worker. Wait for a rural bus and you’ll be waiting.

I ain't clicking that shit

I live 40 minutes from my job & there 2 buses I can get, Bus Eireann takes 2.5 hours to get there, the private bus company I use gets there within an hour but costs 16 euro return everyday and is always late. Im leaving the job because of the public transport. Its not worth it.

No, we aren't. You only need to go to the countryside and anywhere, really aside from Dublin, to see how hard people struggle with public transportation

Such a lot of 'spin'. Are we talking about just city centre transport?. Because public transport outside of cities is amongst non existent. There MIGHT be a bus which is cold, wet, never in time, incredibly expensive and takes at least double the time a car would take.

No its terrible in Dublin and even worse down the country

No. Other than the fare reduction, Dublin has sub standard transport for a capital city (still no metro & slowness of luas line rollout), Bus Éireann cancelled a lot of routes over covid & Iarnród Éireann trains seem to forget theres a west & North of the country needing lines.

No.

No. Irish public transport must be amongst the worst in Europe.

No

Buses always late. Trains always late. Lifts constantly broken so that messes up plans for wheelchair users and those with buggies.

NO

No.

I work with people who take a 2 hour bus journey to get from ballymun to damastown. Its 5 mins in a car. And its 2023 and there is still no trains to donegal. No Ireland is not.

Ireland exists outside of Dublin you know

A massive gap continues to be the lack of frequent late night services.

Expert in article simply uses pre and post pandemic as reference points. It ignores the fact we are coming from such an incredibly poor base level. Any positives from this are also almost entirely due to the Greens being in govt.... and look where they sit in the polls.

No. Next.

no.

Nope

Wow. Brown envelope to write this article? Have you seen how dreadful the service is from Abbey Street out of the city centre?

Ireland is doing better at most things but not given credit by the press-it wouldn’t suit opposition’s agenda.

No

Welp my commute to work is 2.5 hours vs. a 30 min drive- so I don't think so no.

Not if you live where I live 😰

If you finish work past midnight mid week there is no transport, Madrid runs the last metro at 1 am, big difference for hospital porters, cleaners, nurses or any staff

No

it has failed when it comes to rail, the railways are possibly the only benefit the British left during their reign, unfortunately successive attempts have made our rail and light rail so dublin centric and stripped them from so many rural areas.

Part of agenda2030 and youownnothingandyouarehappy Klause will be proud of you just eatzebugz and you'll be perfect for taking over 🤣🤣🤡🤡🤣🤣🤡🤡🥳🥳

There's no way you can spin that angle. Bus routes being cancelled all over the country, people in rural areas unable to get any form of public transport, train lines a fraction of the amount there used to be. Public transport is non existent in most places outside of Dublin

Cant even depend on taxi's in some parts of rural Ireland.

Laughable. These semi leading taglines are becoming the norm across western media outlets. “Exploding your children with dynamite isn’t as bad as you might think. Here’s why.”😒

No. I had to get a taxi to work twice last week because: -Train didn’t show up -Bus didn’t show up The rare time the train did actually show up it had half the amount of carriages it normally does during rush hour so the people were crammed in like sardines in a tin.

No

No, when you can get the train from Donegal to Limerick get back to us.

No, build a underground metro get the boring co to do it cheap
