Ireland has become the first country to introduce comprehensive alcohol warning labels into law.

Labels will now warn of the calorie content, grams of alcohol and health risks of alcohol products.

These regulations will introduce health labelling on all alcohol products sold in Ireland. Health information will also be provided to customers in licensed premises.Labels will warn about the risk of consuming alcohol when pregnant and will also warn of the risk of liver disease and fatal cancers from alcohol consumption.

“This law is designed to give all of us as consumers a better understanding of the alcohol content and health risks associated with consuming alcohol.” “The medical evidence is clear that a cancer risk applies even at lower levels of alcohol consumption,” she said.A national survey by Healthy Ireland found that “significant numbers” of Irish consumers are unaware of the health risks of alcohol consumption.
