Rhys McClenaghan is a world champion again after winning gold on the pommel horse at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp on Saturday afternoon.McClenaghan scored 15.100 to take the gold medal, with American Khoi Young taking silver with 14.966, and Jordan’s Ahmad Al Soud scoring 14.633 to take the bronze medal.
The victory also guarantees McClenaghan a spot at the Paris Olympics next year, where he will be now one of the favourites for gold. McClenaghan was the last out of the eight finalists on the pommel and had seen the reigning Olympic champion Max Whitlock make an error that ruined the Great Britain man's chances of a medal. But as McClenaghan saw his fellow competitors making mistakes, he knew that a clear routine would guarantee him a medal at the very least.
And the Down man held his nerve to nail his performance and win his second successive world title in sensational style.
