John O'Shea insists Ireland are ready to lay foundations for a World Cup push - whether he is manager or not.
“To qualify for tournaments again we need to have a strong home record, a strong home belief that we can see games out,” said O’Shea.Troy Parrott scored a 92nd minute winner to sink Euro 2024-bound Hungary to give the Boys in Green a major boost.O’Shea acknowledged as much and felt Ireland played better in the March scoreless draw with Belgium and 1-0 defeat to Switzerland.
Meanwhile, O'Shea is glad to see Ireland players using their heads again, as he strives to get ahead in the race to become manager. Idah and Evan Ferguson both scored with headers in the 3-0 home win over the group minnows Gibraltar last summer. John Egan headed the Boys in Green into a half-time lead and a famous victory was on the cards until Ronaldo won it at the death with two brilliant headed efforts.
“So we just reminded him before the game that, if we ‘re in crossing positions, it’s why we should get the detail right on it. Victory over the Euro 2024-finalists strengthens O’Shea’s claims to succeed Kenny on a full-time basis, but no more than that. But while he is tasked with picking the team, O’Shea insists he will always have time for experienced pros - some of whom may have feared their Ireland days were numbered.
