IRA 'claim responsibility' for explosive devices found in London and Glasgow

A group calling itself the IRA has claimed responsibility for letter bombs sent to the University of Glasgow and transport hubs in London last week, police say.

The following day, last Wednesday, another device was found in the mailroom of the University of Glasgow, which caused the campus to be evacuated before a controlled explosion was carried out.A joint statement said: "Given the packages received last week bore similarities to devices sent in the past which were linked to dissident groups associated with Northern Ireland-related terrorism, officers were already looking at this as a line of enquiry.

"This advice was previously sent to armed forces personnel and is being reiterated again in light of this claim. The only explosive to detonate was the first to be discovered in London, just before 10am at The Compass Centre, in the grounds of Heathrow Airport, Hounslow.
