We just got out of the bus,” one man said in an American drawl.
Speaking to the Irish Mirror following the canvass, the former Rose of Tralee winner admitted that there has “been great recognition” now that she is seeking re-election. Ms Walsh explained that she has split her weeks between Brussels and Ireland, which she thinks has helped her as she seeks her second term.
The recognition continued as the canvass continued through Westport to McGreevey’s newsagents, where Mr Harris was treated to “the best ice cream in Ireland”. This was despite the Taoiseach insisting the group would put the order in and “collect it on the way back”. What wasn’t seen in the videos shared on social media by the Irish Mirror was the warm welcome for the Taoiseach in Westport. You didn’t see the cheers started by Mr Ring as he walked up and down, nor the shout of “G’wan Simon” from a young man. The excitement of young Ava Maher, who waited for Mr Harris to leave a pub so that she could take a picture with the new Taoiseach, was also overshadowed.
“And Maria Walsh, mum was at the Rose of Tralee when she was elected. I think she is… They’re both, doing brilliant for the country.”
