When Aimee Clarke was dropped from the Dublin Ladies panel after dedicating years of her life to the sport, she didn’t know what her future would look like. The winger, from the north inner city, has been a brilliant asset to the province since picking up the sport in 2017.
“I started GAA when I was four. In my last year for minor, when I had just turned 18, I ended up getting dropped from the panel,” Aimee told RSVP Live. “That was in April and by November I was the first every 18-year-old to be called straight to the Leinster senior panel. I was really, really lucky.” “Once I got into rugby it was like this whole new world opened up to me, with lovely people and such unreal support. I’ve never been more grateful in my life to get a random message on Facebook.”“If you would’ve asked me when I was 16 if I would be representing a province in rugby, I would have laughed at you to be honest,” she said.
Aimee’s rugby skills are going from strength to strength and she would love to one day follow in the footsteps of some teammates and represent Ireland. “Women’s rugby is definitely on the up. We’re getting more recognition, but like any sport, work can always be done,” she said.“When I was 17 I didn’t even know Ireland had a women’s rugby team but that’s completely changed now. You have three and four-year-old girls and boys watching women’s sport.”
