The European Union executive recommended yesterday to suspend funds worth €7.5 billion for what it sees as Hungary's failure to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law.
In addition, it changes rules governing state asset management foundations, obliging them explicitly to issue public procurement tenders for projects and tightening conflict of interest rules in their management. However, with big challenges over rising energy costs and double-digit inflation, a weak forint and a slowing economy, the veteran prime minister looks willing to meet EU demands to finally create institutions that would cut corruption risks in EU-funded projects.
"The bigger problem for Orban is the money tied up in the Recovery Fund, because the Commission has more discretion over whether it gives that the green light or not," Mr Rahman said.

The unelected bureaucrats in Brussels complain about the erosion of democracy in Hungary.This wouldn't have anything to do with Orban's failure to go along the EU sanctions which are having a disasterous effect on the people of Europe with inflation and fuel shortages .
Orban is a friend of Putin...Hungary vetoed oil sanctions on Russia is June.. Probably will again in December when they are meant to come into force....Strange as the Red Army invaded Hungary in 1956 and conquered Budapest killing a lot of people....
