Huge swarms of flying ants to descend upon Ireland in the coming weeks

Flying ants are a natural part of Ireland's insect eco-system, and a highly valuable addition at that. They are basically the reproductive, fertile male and new female queen ants, also called alates, who fly the coop to mate and create brand new colonies, continuing the life cycle.

Every year, videos of "Flying Ant Day" - the day when the presence of the swarms is most visible to humans and the ants are the most prolific - go viral. However, Flying Ant Day is really a bit of a myth, as it is more like a flying ant season than specific day. It is important to remember that these flying ants are just regular ants but with wings, and they are a vital part of the natural eco-system, aerating soil, cycling soil nutrients, and controlling smaller pests.

The ants generally don't care too much about humans, and it is reasonably safe to be in relative proximity of their swarms. Technically, ants can bite, but as they are focused on mating they are not particularly interested in humans. However, to be safe and avoid any risk of bites, the swarms should be avoided where possible.
