In the case of a child who turned 18 after May 2023 and they are still in full-time education, they will be eligible again from May 2024 up to their 19th birthday. In cases where the education certificate expires prior to the 19th birthday, a new education certificate will be issued to the parent/guardian before it expires. This must be completed and returned to allow payment of Child Benefit to resume.
The Department will be directly in contact with a parent/guardian if they need to provide an updated education certificate.

New Changes to Parent's Leave Scheme to Benefit FamiliesNew families up and down the country are in line for a handy cash boost after a shake-up to social welfare allowances. The Parent’s Leave scheme was set up to let working parents spend more time with their baby or adopted child during the first two years of its life, with each parent entitled to seven weeks of leave for their child. Those eligible will be able to take time off during the first two years of their newborn's life or for up to two years after adoption, with parents also in line to receive Parent's Benefit during this time, worth €274 per week. This summer, both schemes are subject to a major change, with the leave period to be extended to nine weeks, meaning that parents will get an extra two weeks with their child and another two Parent's Benefit payments. Here's all you need to know about the eligibility criteria: How does the scheme work? These new changes will come into effect in August, with parents able to take the weeks off together or separately. While you must be on Parent's Leave to get Parent’s Benefit, it’s possible to qualify for Parent’s Leave and not qualify for Parent’s Benefit (for example, if you don’t meet the PRSI contribution conditions). Everyone is entitled to Parent’s Benefit during the leave period.
