Homeless asylum seekers: ‘They told me there is no space but I see all these empty places in Dublin. There is no mercy’Chris O’Reilly, who runs the Liberty Soup Run, said Ann was a “lovely lady, a real character” and many people would have known her. Ann Delaney, originally from Co Laois, was found in a sleeping bag close to a Tesco supermarket on Aungier Street in Dublin city centre. Photograph: rip.ie“Lots of people tried to help her. This isn’t anything to do with the Government. She was offered much help from the family and doctors and she refused it,” one said.Ms Delaney, who attended numerous psychiatrists over the years, had suffered from mental health problems and later alcoholism.
Admirers placed flowers, candlelights, a photograph of her, her walking stick and bottles of water at the spot where she died. She was apparently never without a large bottle of mineral water. Mary Downes said she would come once or twice a week just to see her. “She was a nice person, but she had a lot of troubles towards the end of her life. So many people tried to help her over the years. She ended up back on the street. She had a drink problem.”
