The country’s top doctor has defended his remarks in which he described crowds out socialising as “shocking” and has said it was like All-Ireland day.His comments come as public spaces in Dublin and Cork have been blocked off with barriers in a bid to prevent people congregating on the Bank Holiday weekend.
In a statement, the Office of Public Works said the barriers were put up to “protect vulnerable historic features from vandalism and anti-social behaviour.” Fencing will also be erected at the Port of Cork and other parts of the city after crowds gathered outdoors in recent days. He said he has “sympathy with both sides of the argument” but knows “some residents have had awful consequences with people who don’t have access to toilets.”
He added: “People have been asked to limit themselves for 15 months, that's been a huge ask, so it's a small wonder that people are frustrated.”He said that his Government has provided millions of euros for councils that haven't been used. “My own department, the Department of Transport, provided a €15million fund for local authorities, saying if you need to spend money to pedestrianise streets or create a safe space we will provide it.
