Minister for Justice Helen McEntee is to seek Cabinet approval for tougher sentencing for knife crime. Alongside Minister of State James Browne, Ms McEntee will bring a memo to Cabinet seeking longer sentencing on Tuesday morning, as well as measures to deal with antisocial behaviour.
The aim is to increase the maximum penalty for these serious knife crime offences, in an effort to target people who have a willingness and intent to use knives, to a seven-year maximum sentence.Intensive care hospital beds increased 30% in four years, report findsSpeaking on RTÉ radio on her way into Cabinet, Ms McEntee said it was necessary for legislation to reflect the seriousness of the crime.
Social democrat TD Catherine Murphy told RTÉ Morning Ireland that there needed to be greater investment in youth services and preventive measures after figures on knife crime released as part of a parliamentary question indicated that the quantity of knives being seized in every part of the country was “a cause for concern”, including 475 across both constituencies in Kildare over the past 10 years.
