Professor Christine Loscher said the recent increase in new Covid-19 cases is not a surprise, because many other restrictions have been eased and people are mixing together more.Of those in hospital, 69 are in ICU, unchanged on yesterday.Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Prof Loscher said these mitigating risk factors should include maintaining the need for Covid-19 vaccination certs for indoor activities, along with a continued focus on mask wearing and hand sanitising.

She said that the majority of patients with Covid-19 requiring admission to hospital and into ICU are not vaccinated, and that the unvaccinated 10% of the adult population is driving 50% of admissions. Ms O'Connor said hospitals, particularly in Galway, Limerick and Cork, are under pressure there were less than 100 beds available across the whole system last night.
