Environment minister pushes for use of budget surplus to restore biodiversity and rewet peatlands, while EU accused of ‘land grab' over nature targets proposal

The Green Party is pushing to use the state budget surpluses to pay off farmers and other landowners if they return parts of their land to nature, the Business Post has learned.

The move comes after two weeks of acrimony over the European Union’s proposed Nature Restoration Law, which sets targets for restoring nature across Europe, including specific targets around the rewetting of peatlands.
