Graeme Souness has criticised Manchester United's decision to replace David de Gea with Andre Onana - and believes Erik ten Hag would have been better off keeping the Spaniard

Graeme Souness has questioned Erik ten Hag over the decision to release David de Gea in the wake of Andre Onana 's poor form this season.

Souness is adamant that Onana's signing is the perfect example of how "average" the club's recruitment has been in recent years - and that United would have been better off sticking with De Gea. “De Gea was still a top goalkeeper. Every goalkeeper will make a mistake. They’ve spent £70m on a new goalkeeper but are they really playing any differently now, just because Onana is better on the ball? That money should have been spent elsewhere and been more productive. The recruitment has been pretty average.”
