The Government will appoint Lieut Gen Seán Clancy as a four-star general should he prove successful as Ireland’s candidate for the post of European Union Military Committee chair.

The Government recently agreed to nominate Lieut Gen Seán Clancy as Ireland’s candidate for the post of EUMC chair. Inside historic west Cork home of the creator of The Irish RM: ‘I always knew we’d end up living here’ “While they are not referred to in records as ‘star generals” , these ranks would be the equivalent as they had subordinate lieutenant generals – which is the rank that the Chief of Staff currently holds.”

“The EUMC provides the Political and Security Committee with advice and recommendations on all military matters including on all aspects of the planning/operation of the common security and defence policy operations. “Should the Chief of Staff be successful in being elected as chair of the EUMC, a number of Defence Forces personnel would be deployed as support staff in the office of the C/EUMC in Brussels. The exact numbers and ranks involved have yet to be determined. In addition, Lt General Clancy who is currently a three-star general would be promoted on a temporary basis to a four-star general for the three year period of the appointment.
