The Government is moving forward with its plan to accommodate 500 refugees in the last hotel in Drogheda that is open for tourists, causing controversy among local business leaders and politicians.

The Government is going ahead with its plan to put 500 refugees in the last hotel in Drogheda open for tourists. Integration Minister Roderic O' Gorman informed local business leaders and politicians on Saturday, causing fury. A massive local campaign had been launched to try and get the D Hotel to be used for dual purpose with a mixture of refugees and visitors. But he informed the Drogheda Chamber of Commerce this would not be possible.

The Minister has been at loggerheads with the three local TDs Fergus O Dowd, Ged Nash and Imelda Munster on the issue. They were only told about his plan to move such a huge number of International Protection applicants into the town when the deal with the hotel was signed. It is understood the refugees will start moving into the hotel which is situated next door to the the main shopping centre in Drogheda Scotch Hall, in the next week or two
