Should red level warnings be issued, the public are advised to shelter in place for the duration of the warning

The government has issued a serious warning to the public after Met Eireann updated the Storm Barra warning to a status orange as 130 km/hr gusts are expected.

“Winds will be strongest in western coastal counties with severe or damaging gusts possible. Heavy rain will also bring the possibility of localised flooding. Officials have warned that it is likely Met Éireann will issue further warnings in advance of Storm Barra as the likely impacts become clearer.

Meanwhile, local authorities have activated their Crisis Management Teams and Local Co-ordination Groups and Coastal flood defences are being put in place.
