Ireland could have up to eight power interconnectors in next decade under new plans

The government is exploring up to five new interconnector projects in the coming years, which will further link Ireland’s electricity grid with Europe and Britain.

The additional interconnectors being examined include new links with France, Spain, Britain, and the Netherlands or Belgium. Cabinet signed off on a new policy statement on electricity interconnection yesterday, after Eamon Ryan, the Minister for Environment, completed a high-level strategy in relation to building further interconnectors in the years ahead.
