The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission says all Covid-related emergency powers should have sunset clauses.

Image: Rollingnews Image: Rollingnews GOVERNMENT’S USE OF pandemic related emergency powers has disproportionately affected minorities and younger people, according to new research from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission .

The report also suggests that garda enforcement of emergency powers has disproportionately affected young people, ethnic and racial minorities, Travellers and Roma. The expanded powers given to gardaí allowed for a fine of up to €2,500 or six months in jail if people breached guidelines such as the requirement to stay in their county, organised an unlawful gathering or, later, failed to wear a face gathering on public transport.

Each time a breach of the health legislation is detected, gardaí must refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions for proceedings to be commenced. An Garda Síochána has said it prefers to secure compliance through consent rather than enforcement in these matters. Compliance with guidelines was also frequently reported to be very high.

IHREC Chief Commissioner Sinéad Gibney told Morning Ireland that people to need to know when and how the force of the State can be brought against them.

3 Vaccine roll out has to be quicker, no excuse much bigger populated countries are 10 fold faster and a end to restrictions. The damage lockdown has done far exceeds any risk from covid.

2 Irish public have had enough, they simply can't take any more. The longest workplace closing in the EU and the most harsh and longest restrictions (lockdown) in the EU.

1 The Irish public have had all human rights taken away, and there never was equality rights. Irish people have shown unbelievable restrain and patience. If what was endured on the Irish public was forced on other nations there would have been violent disturbances.

I am actually surprised the IHREC threw down the race card about Covid - I know they play the race card whenever they can but I thought at least on the pandemic they would restrain themselves....

What's happening to Irish media? Has the funding from the Government run out? EnoughIsEnough

Nothing is clear with this government. All word shuffling and back biting.... They’re doing such a bad job they should give themselves a pay rise 🤮

'Shifting relations between NPHET and Government makes it difficult to ascertain where human rights and equality concerns are being addressed.'

Sure the guards are absolute wankers making up laws as the go along, backwards clown's

This was a deliberate strategy by the govt., not an accident. They made a tactical decision to actively misrepresent public health advice as the law last year. They have no respect whatsoever for the the integrity of the law or the constitution & certainly no respect for the ppl.

These groups have been disproportionately affected because they have been the biggest culprits in ignoring the anti-COVID measures. Not the only culprits, but the ones that make the news, day after day.

And then some, gardai have gone beyond what the powers were intended on a daily basis.

An interesting read. A functioning democracy does require transparency from the police—arguably more so during a crisis. Good to see healthy probing. Has the line been crossed where the state should be policing or is this necessary action during a pandemic? BringBackNormal

Are they mad?

Govt blurring lines on emergency legislation - IHRECThe Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission has found that the Government has persistently blurred the boundary between legal requirements and public health guidance in its response to Covid-19. Human rights ...dignity..the right to work earn a living the right to choose how you live more health concerns in the world other than covid-19 unfortunately these are all being ignored which will have a huge impact when covid-19 is no longer top of the agenda _IHREC Glad to see this articulated by experts.. state enforcement of some restrictions has been shockingly blurry, murky even, and disproportionate both across citizen demographics and in the context of travel. To right they have
