Exclusive: Meav McLoughlin Doyle, who was assaulted by her former soldier husband, says she knows 'all too well' how disheartening it can be to navigate the court system

A woman who was assaulted by her former soldier husband hopes to “take a stand” with survivor Natasha O’Brien to stop future attacks.

Meav said she was horrified to see Crotty’s job used in his defence – something that brought her back to her own trauma when a court detailed Doyle’s offending.READ MORE: Defence Forces praise bravery of woman beaten unconscious by serving soldier Cathal Crotty who walked free from court Meav said: “I too had to listen about Mark’s job and I too had to be told to dampen down expectations. During the summing up, I too had to listen to Judge Nolan talk about Mark’s glowing character reference and that he could have a better future.

“I spent years hearing how Mark being outed would affect his career. I understand judges thinking people who commit crimes will go on to lead better lives and contribute to society but when it comes to gender-based violence, a clear message need to be imparted it will not be tolerated. Last week, the country was rocked after Crotty, 22, from Parkroe Heights in Ardnacrusha, Co Clare, was spared jail over his assault on Natasha in Limerick in 2022. He beat her unconscious after she objected to him shouting gay slurs at another man – and boasted about it afterwards on social media.
