It is an offence to drive with defective or worn tyres. This attracts a fine of €80 and up to four penalty points upon conviction.
The minimum permitted tyre tread depth is 1.6 mm. However, for safety reasons, it is recommended that each tyre should have at least 3.0 mm tread depth. Most new tyres have 8.0 mm. The car was also found to have none of the necessary requirements for it to be legally driven on the road.The motorist was also an unaccompanied learner driver.
A Garda spokesperson said: “This week when they stopped this car for having 2 bald tyres; no tax, NCT or insurance disc; faulty lights and for being driven by an unaccompanied learner with L Plates displayed.”Elsewhere, gardai from the Naas Roads Policing Unit seized a vehicle for speeding while out on patrol.The driver was also an unaccompanied learner driver.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Naas RPU detected this motorist travelling at 153km/hr on the motorway. The motorist was an unaccompanied Learner Permit Holder with no L plates displayed.
